Augmenting the Sheriff's Department
Reserves are a resource that I believe have been overlooked by many law enforcement agencies. With the economy in the condition that it has been in, times have been hard for not only citizens but local governments as well. Some law enforcement agencies in the United States have realized just how great of an asset these reserve divisions are. They can utilize reserves to partner up with regular officers, take reports and conduct special patrols as well as work special event security and traffic control. Utilizing reserves very regularly can be an effective way to help keep the cost of over-time down as well as help increase police presence and reduce response times. The main purpose of a reserve division is to augment the regular force and to provide additional man power when needed. Reserves are generally unpaid volunteers who have received law enforcement training. They can work with regular officers or independently with limited powers, all depending upon that department's policy.
I will begin to recruit candidates to become reserve deputies so that we have more reserves to augment the sheriff's department. I will utilize the reserves regularly to perform many reasonable duties. The reserve deputies are highly valuable assets, many do the job because they want to help out in the communities. Some do it because they would like to go in to law enforcement as a career. The bottom line is that they know that they can make a difference!
Dwayne,
I have a friend who happens to be the Captain of a Reserve Program. He told me that the reserves have been very very busy lately. With everyone's budget crisis the reserve program has helped out immensely. It will continue to do so. Having a reserve program will offset the regular deputies and allow them to team up with them and work a shift. WCSD has forgotten about their reserve program and I am excited to hear that you will bring it back. Reserves will always be around and there is always someone out there even if they dont want to become a full fledged deputy, they want to serve their community and most of all help the department out.
